Alaska’s prevalence of alcohol dependence and abuse is 14 percent, twice the national average. Now, a new online resource aims to help Alaskans learn more about alcohol abuse, treatment options and the journey to recovery. RecoverAlaska.org, a partnership with United Way of Anchorage and Alaska 2-1-1, provides Alaskans with help and hope as they navigate the difficult alcohol recovery process, whether they are beginning on day one or are seeking information for a friend or loved one.
The Recover Alaska Resource Center includes online tools such as an alcohol screening, which allows people to test their knowledge of alcohol; important information about alcohol treatment; a powerful search engine to locate alcohol related resources; and personal stories from Alaskans. The Day 001 video series, also highlighted on RecoverAlaska.org, aims to inspire Alaskans with true stories of people from all walks of life, sharing their “day one” moment. Other features include a Frequently Asked Questions section that addresses questions like “What’s considered a standard drink?” and “How do I know if I have an alcohol problem?”
“The journey to recovery—no matter which stage you’re at—is difficult and complicated and we wanted to create an online resource that answers many of the questions Alaskans have,” said Tiffany Hall, Executive Director, Recover Alaska. “We hope that the Recover Alaska Resource Center will not only help people through recovery and inspire others to take the first steps toward their own day one, but serve as a valuable clearinghouse of information and resources for health care providers and alcohol counselors.”[xyz-ihs snippet=”adsense-body-ad”]
Alaska 2-1-1, a service of United Way of Anchorage, has partnered with Recover Alaska for the new online tool. Alaska 2-1-1 has an information and referral specialist on staff who can confidentially address calls related to alcohol abuse and treatment. Alaska 2-1-1 also helps Alaskans connect to a wide variety of vital resources in the community, including emergency food and shelter, counseling services, drug programs, legal assistance and more.
“Alcohol addiction is a pressing health concern for our state,” said Sue Brogan, United Way of Anchorage, Alaska 2-1-1. “By combining the comprehensive database and knowledgeable staff of Alaska 2-1-1 with the advocacy, awareness and engagement work of Recover Alaska, we can help connect people to the supports they need. We are excited to partner with Recover Alaska to reduce the impact of alcohol abuse that touches the lives of countless people every day.”
