The initial report that 36-year-old Unalakleet resident Harold Soxie was missing came in to the troopers at 10:28 pm on Sunday. That report related that Soxie had drove north of the community of Unalakleet on his ATV  to “meet an acquaintance near Egavik,” the previous night, the trooper dispatch reported. It was reported that later, Soxie headed back to Unalakleet.

A family member reported that Soxie had called at approximately 9:57 pm Saturday night, and stated that he had returned to Unalakleet after meeting with the acquaintance. That same family member reported that they had missed an additional call from Soxie during the early Sunday morning hours.

After not hearing from Soxie later that day, family members searched the village, and when that was unsuccessful, reported Soxie missing to the Alaska State Troopers in Nome.

Unalakleet Search and Rescue initiated a search of the village. Because of inclement weather and operating on information that Soxie was in the community, searchers did not extend their search beyond the community’s boundaries.

On Monday morning, after exhausting all possibilities within the community, Unalakleet SAR sent a team to search the trails surrounding the community. At 10:49 am, troopers were advised that Soxie’s remains were located on an established trail approximately five miles north of the community. The continuing search would turn up Soxie’s ATV 2.1 miles further up the trail to the northeast.

Although troopers report that they discovered no evidence of foul play, the investigation is continuing. Soxie’s remains were sent to the State Medical Examiner’s office in Anchorage for autopsy. Soxie’s next of kin were notified.[xyz-ihs snippet=”Adsense-responsive”]
