The U.S. Capitol building, the Supreme Court and the Library of Congress went into evacuation mode briefly on Saturday after a small single engine plane crossed into restricted airspace in Washington D.C.
The Capitol entered “AirConRed” at approximately 1:30pm after the pilot of the single-engine Cessna failed to respond to call from air traffic controllers after the pilot crossed into restricted airspace. Meanwhile a fighter jet was ordered to intercept the errant aircraft.
The aircraft soon left the airspace after being successfully contacted and diverted to a Virginia airport. The evacuation notice was lifted shortly thereafter at approximately 2pm.
Following protocol, the FAA will interview the trespassing pilot who remains unidentified.
The Capitol police say that there has been no explanation as to why the aircraft strayed into the airspace. But, small aircraft straying into the restricted airspace above the capitol is not all that uncommon, although the evacuation notice that came as a result of the incident is.
The president was not in Washington at the time, he was in Maryland playing golf.
