The Department of Public Safety has released the name of the trooper involved in a gunfire incident near Cooper Landing at mile 55 on Sunday.
It was on Sunday that Trooper Kevin Gill responded to a report of a suspicious male standing along the roadside at mile 55 near Cooper Landing. He arrived on scene at 2:40 pm in the afternoon. When Trooper Gill attempted to contact the man, later identified as 30-year-old Timothy J. Lange of Anchorage, Lange produced a handgun and fired it at Trooper GIll.
Although Trooper Gill would return fire, no one was injured in the brief altercation and Lange was ultimately taken into custody.
Lange was transported to the Wildwood Pretrial Facility and remanded there on charges of Attempted Murder I, Assault III, Misconduct Involving Weapons III, Assault IV, Reckless Endangerment, and Resisting Arrest. No bail was set.
Lange was arraigned on Monday morning.
As per policy, Trooper Gill’s identity was not released for 72 hours. The incident is still under investigation by the Alaska Bureau of Investigation. That report will be reviewed by the Department of Law’s Office of Special Prosecution and Appeals once it is completed.
