Troopers Warn of ‘Warrant’ Phone Scam

phone scamAlaska State Troopers are alerting the public state-wide of a scam being carried out on the phone with the caller identifying themselves as a trooper, the trooper dispatch reported on Tuesday.

According to the advisory, the scammer identifies themselves as a trooper and then “explains to their victim that a court date was missed or a warrant has been issued for them or a family member,” then informs the victim that they can rectify the issue by purchasing a pre-paid debit card and calling a 1-800 number provided by the scammer for “additional” instructions.

Although there are probably other numbers being used by the scammers, troopers say, 1-800-935-7570 is the number reported by victims state-wide.

Troopers advise that they do not “ask for payment over the phone or offer to negotiate for reduced payment in lieu of arrest,” and also say that if you are concerned that you may have an active warrant issued for your arrest, you can visit AST Warrants  to find out if in fact, this is the case.[xyz-ihs snippet=”Adsense-responsive”]
