Alaska State Troopers responded to a crash on the Glenn Highway near Eureka at mile 116 late Tuesday afternoon.
The investigation at the scene found that a 1999 Subaru Legacy was traveling on the highway when it left the roadway and went down an embankment. As it went over the embankment, the vehicle rolled several times, ejecting the driver, 21-year-old Wasilla resident Ryan Palmer and a passenger, 19-year-old Palmer resident Michael Sunderland, from the vehicle.
Because of the remote location, it took EMS and troopers longer to respond. A passing crew of Chena Hotspot Wildland firefighters, which included two medics, stopped and cared for the injured and put out the burning vehicle. A physician from Joint Base Elmendorf Fort Richardson, who was on the roadway as well, stopped and administered aid.
Two LifeMed helicopters responded to the scene and transported both individuals to Providence Hospital in Anchorage.
The investigation into the crash is continuing.
Neither person was wearing a seatbelt at the time of the crash.
