Two men in a Piper J-3 aircraft that were reported overdue from a flight near Lake Clark on Thursday have been located about eight miles from their downed aircraft on Sunday shortly after noon.
The aircraft was reported overdue on Thursday with 53-year-old Salem Oregon resident Patrick P. Williams and 65-year-old Wilkesboro, North Carolina resident James L. Minton. The Rescue Corrdination Center notified the Alaska State Troopers about the missing aircraft on Friday.
Alaska Wildlife troopers and Alaska State Troopers flew until the weather deteriorated on Friday but by 7 pm, they were still unable to locate the aircraft. The Rescue Cordination Center also flew the area but were unable to to detect an ELT.
At that time it was reported that one of the occupants of the plane had very little outdoor experience and was unfamiliar with the area. In the report, it was revealed that they had a rifle aboard butt no other survival gear.
Five aircraft from the Bristol Bay area flew the area in search of the two men and their aircraft on Saturday to no avail.
It wasn’t until Sunday afternoon that the men were located in the field. They were picked up by helicopter and transported to Illiamna. They were in fair conditon when found.
