On Wednesday night at approximately 10:45 pm, Alaska State Troopers patrolling the Sterling Highway made a routine traffic stop on a vehicle at mile 168.
After being pulled over, a 19-year-old Homer man, later identified as Joseph Newton, placed his vehicle in neutral. But, according to the report, Newton failed to set the parking brake on his 1999 Subaru Legacy and the vehicle began rolling backwards. When it did so, the Subaru crashed into the 2011 Chevy Tahoe Patrol vehicle.
As a result of the inadvertant collision with the patrol vehicle, the Subaru suffered approximately $500 worth of damage. The patrol vehicle suffered no apparent damage. No injuries were reported.
Further investigation found that Newton was driving with a revoked license.
Subsequent to the investigation, Newton was arrested and transported to the Homer Jail where he was remanded.
