There were no reports of injuries from the collision, nor were there any reports of pollution and the damage was confined to the bow section of the “Sycamore.” The barge only suffered cosmetic damage.
The Sycamore conducts law enforcement missions in the state of Alaska as well as search and rescue missions and also tends to navigational aids throughout the state.
The “Sycamore” was built by Marinette Marine in Marinette, Wisconsin and launched in July of 2001. The vessel was commissioned in Cordova in 2002 and replaced the Sweetbrier which had been stationed there since 1976.
The cause of the collision is under investigation by Marine Safety Valdez personnel.
