Victim in Arctic Benson Park Shooting Dies in Hospital, Case Elevates to Homicide

The male victim shot by Daren Barnhart during a dispute over a bicycle at the Arctic Benson Park on July 4th has died from his gunshot injury at the hospital where he has been since the incident.

As a result, the case is now being investigated as a homicide, APD reports.

The District Attorney’s office is reviewing the case and further charges may be leveled at Barnhart.

On July 4th, during a dispute, Barnhart took out a firearm and shot his victim in the lower body. The group disbursed prior to police arrival. 

Almost two weeks later a caller reported sighting Barnhart on Spenard Road. While Barnhart attempted to escape police, he was apprehended by K-9 Midas.
Barnhart is currently housed at the Anchorage Jail with no bail.
