A routine traffic stop turned into a drug bust on Sunday night when a trooper stopped a vehicle for an illegal turn and traveling in the wrong lane in Wasilla.
Alaska State Troopers stopped a 2000 Mitsubishi Montero on Lucille near Herning Drive in Wasilla and contacted 57-year-old David O’Kelly of Wasilla after observing him making an illegal turn and then driving in the wrong lane at 10 pm on Sunday.
Troopers determined that O’Kelly was driving under the influence and also driving with his license revoked. He was arrested on the charges. The subsequent search of the vehicle, would find live marijuana plants in the back seat of his vehicle.
Further search of the vehicle would reveal a large quantity of methamphetamine packaged for sale, according to trooper dispatch. As they continued investigating the vehicle, their search would uncover a large quantity of cash as well as a handgun and more marijuana.
As a result of the vehicle search, O’Kelly was also charged with Misconduct Involving a Controlled Substance II, III, IV x3, and VI, Misconduct Involving Weapons II, along with the DUI and DWLR charges.
O’Kelly was transported to the Mat-Su Pretrial Facility and remanded there with his bail set at $15,000 cash only and a Court Approved Third Party Custodian.
