On Tuesday, Anchorage Police responded to a call reporting a suspicious vehicle driving around in the Diamond Center parking lot. The call came in at about 10:15 am.
Officers responded to the area and located the green Ford F-150 near Lake Otis and 88th. They continued to follow the vehicle as it made its way to Windflower Street.
The vehicle was identified as one that had been taken from an area in southwest Anchorage about two hours earlier.
When confronted, the vehicle, driven by Carl Bowie III attempted to ram its way through the two police vehicles that were on the scene. One of the vehicles was positioned in such a way that it picked up the shooting on its video system. A spokesperson for the police department said that the video will be released to the public later on in the investigation of the incident.
The two officers opened fire on Bowie while he was in the vehicle at 53rd and Windflower. The officers fired seven rounds, striking Bowie three times. He died at the scene. Bowie also had a female passenger in the F-150 with him. The un-named passenger was also injured in the incident. She was taken into custody. As of yesterday, the department hasn’t released any further information about the woman or her condition.
The investigation into the incident is continuing. A separate investigation into the shooting is also underway.
The names of the officers involved in the shooting waill be released on Friday, as is the policy of the Anchorage Police Department.
