For the first time since April 30th, 2012, Anchorage has experienced a fatal alcohol-related crash, according to Anchorage Police. At just before 5 am on Sunday morning, Alaska's largest community suffered another one.
According to police, Airman 1st Class Douglas Wyatt of Joint Base Elmendorf-Fort Richardson was northbound on Boniface Parkway in a Chrysler 300 traveling at a high rate of speed and ran a red light at the intesection with DeBarr Road, t-boning a Chevrolet Monte Carlo driven by Citari Townes-Sweatt. She was killed at the scene.

Three passengers in the Chrysler were injured in the accident, as were four passengers in the Monte Carlo. All were taken to hospital for treatment of their injuries.
The 22-year-old Airman admitted to drinking at Chilkoot Charlies before the accident. He is suspected of driving under the influence even though official results of the blood test were yet unavailable. He has been charged with Manslaughter, seven counts of Assault and DUI.
He is being held on $50,000 bail. In court he told the judge that his military pay is not enough to afford a lawyer. He was assigned a public defender at his Sunday arraignment.
On Monday, friends and family honored the memory of Townes-Sweatt at the crash site.
