Kodiak Black Ice Results in Three Rollovers in One Day

black iceTroopers report that black ice conditions on Kodiak roadways resulted in three separate rollovers in the area last Friday.

Troopers responded to a rollover vehicle accident at 3:38 pm on Friday at mile 10.5 of the Chiniak Highway. The investigation at the scene there, determined that 27-year-old Tommy Panks of Florida, while operating his 1994 Ford Pickup, encountered black ice on the road, lost control of the vehicle, and overturned in the ditch. Panks, who was alone in the vehicle, reported that he was not wearing his seat belt, but sustained no injuries.

Less than an hour later, at 4:34, troopers responded to another rollover on the Chiniak Highway, this one at mile 3.5. The trooper investigation would find that 20-year-old Tepora Sega was driving her 2000 Dodge Pickup when she encountered black ice and lost control of her vehicle. Her vehicle ran into the ditch there and overturned.

Sega reported that both she and her passenger was wearing their seat belts at the time of the incident and suffered no injuries. The Dodge was deemed a total loss.

Later that day, at 10:41 pm, troopers would respond to another rollover accident. This accident occurred at mile 4 of Monashka Bay Road. Troopers report that 18-year-old Hunter Shults of Florida was driving his 1990 Toyota 4-Runner when he encountered black ice on the roadway and lost control of his vehicle. He too would end up overturned in the ditch. He reported that he and his passenger were wearing their seat belts. They reported no injuries, but the Toyota was reported to be a complete loss.
