An employee from the Inter-Island Ferry Terminal in Hollis on Prince of Wales Island called in to the Alaska State Troopers to report a suspicious item that they thought could be a possible explosive device at 2:30 pm on Thursday.
As a result, the terminal was evacuated, and vehicle and foot traffic was blocked off from the area. The IFA ferry that was in Ketchikan at the time, was held in that city, and air traffic was diverted away from the terminal area.
Troopers requested and received a photograph of the suspicious item and shared it with the explosives experts at the FBI. The FBI determined that there was a “high likelihood” that the item was an explosive device.
At 6 pm, “after obtaining and reviewing surveillance video,” troopers say that they were able to identify the person who had placed the item in the trashcan and speak with them. The person that they spoke with “confirmed that it was a novelty alarm clock that was discarded in the trashcan after it had gotten broken.”
After their investigation, troopers determined that there was no malicious intent in the incident. They say no further action will be taken.
