At just before 3 pm on Sunday, an accident occurred in a construction zone near milepost 2 of the Kenai Spur highway when an intoxicated woman plowed into a trailer and truck while texting on her phone according to trooper dispatch.
Alaska State Troopers and the Bureau of Highway Patrol responded to the scene on the Kenai Spur Highway at 2:51 pm on Sunday afternoon to conduct an investigation into the incident.
Their investigation found that 29-year-old Soldotna resident Kara Kellerby was driving her 2006 Jeep Commander southbound on the Highway in a marked construction zone when she crashed into a trailer with a lit construction sign indicting that vehicles should move to the inside lane of the highway. The trailer was parked in the outside lane and attached to a Ford F-450 pickup truck.
The driver of the Ford, construction worker, Angela O’Brien, suffered minor injuries in the crash and was transported to the Central Peninsula Hospital for treatment of her injuries.
During the investigation, it was found that Kellerby was driving while impaired by alcohol and was also texting at the time of the crash.
Kellerby was arrested by troopers and transported to the Wildwood Pretrial Facility in Kenai where she was charged with Assault III, Driving under the Influence, and Operating a Vehicle with a Screen Device Operating, and remanded there with no bail.
