Wasilla Vehicle Investigation Nets Escaped Anchorage Man

An investigation into a vehicle parked and partially blocking the roadway would net a man wanted for escape in Wasilla on Saturday.

The investigation into the 2000 Dodge Caravan found parked along the roadway would find that the vehicle had plates on it that belonged to a red 1999 Chevy Tahoe instead. A check of the vehicle’s VIN number would show that the vehicle had been reported stolen out of Anchorage previously.

Two witnesses would come forward and describe a man that left the vehicle with a gas can earlier and left westbound on Hollywood Road.

Troopers traveled to the area and located the man fitting the description given by the witnesses. The man would give the troopers false information concerning his identity, but troopers would later identify him as 43-year-old Anchorage resident James Surrells. It would be found that Surrells had two active warrants for his arrest for Escape from a Correctional Facility. I was also found that Surrells had another $5,000 warrant for Failure to Remand on charges of DWLR.

Surrells would be found in possession of a Controlled Substance as well.

Surrells was arrested and charged with Vehicle Theft I, MICS IV, Misuse of Plates, and False Information.

The suspect was transported to the Mat-Su Pretrial Facility and held without bail.
