25-year-old Caleb Moore, the X-Games snowmachiner, who crashed during the Winter X-Games in Aspen on January 24th, has died of injuries sustained in that crash Thursday morning.
Family spokesperson Chelsea Lawson confirmed his death today. It is reported that he died of complications that involved his brain. Moore crashed while attempting a backflip. One of the skis of his snowmachine caught the lip of the ramp causing Moore to catapault over the handlebars. He landed on his face and his snowmachine rolled over him as he slid down the ramp. He was taken to the hospital for treatment of a concussion. Later Moore would develop bleeding around his heart.
X-Games host, ESPN issued a statement offering their condolences, saying, “We are deeply saddened by Caleb Moore’s passing and our thoughts and prayers go out to his parents, Wade and Michelle, his brother, Colten, and the entire Moore family. He will be remembered for his natural passion for life and his deep love for his family and friends, and he will always be an inspiration to everyone he touched in the action sports community.
“As a result of this accident we will conduct a thorough review of this discipline and adopt any appropriate changes to future X Games.
“For 18 years we have worked closely on safety issues with athletes, course designers and other experts. Still, when the world’s best compete at the highest level in any sport, risks remain. Caleb was a four-time X Games medalist attempting a move he has landed several times previously.”
Caleb’s younger brother Colton was also injured in a crash the same day. He separated his pelvis in another snowmachine crash.
Caleb was the winner of four Winter X-Games medals.
